The Name Above All Names: A Summer Charge for Student Pastors

As a student pastor stepping into a summer full of camps, mission trips, late-night talks, and gospel conversations, one truth must remain at the center of it all: the power of the Name of Jesus. Psalm 20:7 says, “Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God.” In a world that chases influence, performance, and appearances, student pastors are called to something far greater—anchoring our trust, identity, and ministry in the eternal name of God.

The name of Jesus isn’t just a label—it represents His character, His authority, and His nature. When we say we trust in the name of the Lord, we’re proclaiming that He alone is our confidence and strength. Everything else—programming, attendance numbers, even our own talents—can easily become “chariots and horses” in disguise. They may give the illusion of power, but they crumble under pressure. However, the name of Jesus holds firm, even when the summer feels long, plans fall apart, or ministry gets messy.

This summer, student pastors have the opportunity to model a different kind of leadership—not one built on human strength, but in the name of the Lord. When we live with confidence in God’s name, we lead students not to ourselves, but to the One who answers, protects, helps, remembers, and gives victory (Psalm 20:1-5). That kind of leadership isn’t loud or flashy—but it is powerful.

So how does this change the way we do ministry? It pushes us to pray boldly, serve sacrificially, wait patiently, and preach courageously. It invites us to trade striving for surrender, performance for presence, and pressure for peace. Isaiah 26:3 reminds us, “You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you.” That’s the kind of peace your students need to see in you.

This summer, don’t lead from illusion—lead from identity. Trust in the name of Jesus and let that trust shape every conversation, every decision, and every moment. The name of Jesus isn’t just powerful—it’s personal. Let it be the anchor of your heart and the anthem of your ministry.
